The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Governor Seyi Makinde of mismanaging N2.9 billion spent on the state’s 50th anniversary celebration. The allegation was contained in a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Olawale Sadare.

The state government, led by Makinde, recently marked its golden jubilee, but the APC claims that the celebration was funded in part by deductions of N90 million from the federal allocations of each of the 33 local government councils. The party added that an undisclosed sum was also taken from the state government coffers for the event.

The APC questioned the justification for the expenditure, citing the cost of an air show, award ceremonies, themed Ankara uniforms for PDP members, and a novelty soccer match as examples of “misplaced” spending.

“Was the huge amount the cost of the misplaced air show, lopsided award conferment, colour-riot Ankara uniform for PDP members and one-man show novelty soccer match that justified the amount?” the statement read.

The opposition party has called for transparency and accountability over the funds, urging the state government to explain how the billions were spent.
