Dangote Cement Plc has rolled out its Safety FairPlay Initiative at the Ibese Plant in Ogun State, a strategic programme aimed at fostering a strong, sustainable safety culture and driving behavioural change among employees. The initiative, designed to be replicated across all Dangote Cement plants nationwide, highlights the company’s commitment to making safety a shared responsibility rather than just a policy.
The pilot launch witnessed enthusiastic participation from both management and staff, reflecting a collective commitment to safer workplace practices. The Safety FairPlay Initiative is structured around three core pillars: Recognition, Correction (Coaching), and Discipline, ensuring that positive safety behaviour is rewarded, at-risk actions are addressed consistently, and incidents, near-misses, or errors are reported transparently.
Transforming Safety into Culture
Speaking at the launch, Dangote Cement Technical Director, Mr. Anandam Duraisamy, described Safety FairPlay as a defining moment in the company’s safety journey. He said:
“Safety FairPlay is about building trust, consistency, and accountability in how we manage safety. When people know that safe behaviour is recognised, risky actions are fairly addressed, and everyone is treated equitably, safety becomes a shared responsibility and a true part of our culture. Every incident prevented, every risk spotted, and every safe action taken strengthens our organisation.”
Duraisamy emphasized that safety excellence begins with people—attitudes, choices, and the willingness to protect one another—and called on employees to champion a safety mindset that is part of daily operations.
Employee Engagement and Commitment
Ibese Plant Head of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), Mr. Elvis Akalusi, praised management for implementing the programme and commended staff for embracing it with enthusiasm. He stressed that Safety FairPlay would be fully integrated into the plant’s operations with support from department heads.
“This initiative will provide the tools, coaching, recognition, and accountability needed to help each of us make safer decisions. Its success depends on our shared commitment—our courage to consistently do the right thing, even when no one is watching,” Akalusi added.
The launch of Safety FairPlay signals a major milestone in Dangote Cement’s effort to build a workplace where safety is ingrained in the company’s culture, aligning personal responsibility with organisational accountability.
