Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Tuesday morning, marking the second blackout in January 2026. The first grid failure occurred just last Friday, highlighting ongoing challenges in the country’s power sector.
The Nigeria National Grid confirmed the latest collapse via a post on X at 10:53 a.m., simply stating: “Grid Collapse.” A follow-up update assured the public that “Restoration is in progress!”
According to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), power generation has fallen to zero megawatts, leaving millions without electricity. Major distribution areas affected include Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Benin, Eko, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, and Yola.
The repeated collapses underscore persistent vulnerabilities in Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and the urgent need for systemic solutions to prevent recurring outages.
