Senator David Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, has asserted that the Southeast region has no viable political alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the country approaches the 2027 elections.
Speaking at his country residence in Umunaga Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Umahi called on youths and stakeholders across the Southeast to embark on mass registration into the APC to secure the region’s political future. The minister addressed supporters following the party’s primary election victory of his son, Osborne Nweze Umahi, as the APC chairmanship candidate for Ohaozara LGA.
“Let everybody go and register in APC. There is no alternative,” Umahi said, urging a concerted membership drive across all Southeast states. He described the APC as the only platform capable of delivering sustainable development, political inclusion, and national representation for the region, warning against political isolation.
Umahi commended President Bola Tinubu for his administration’s efforts to address long-standing grievances in the Southeast, including agitation for secession. “The President has defied all the agitation from Biafra. We are not living on sentiments,” he said, stressing that political advancement for the region cannot be achieved through emotional rhetoric or intimidation.
The minister emphasized that Southeast states must focus on concrete achievements and active participation in national politics rather than protests or agitation. He said the current administration has begun correcting historical imbalances and assured that the Southeast will produce a credible presidential candidate “when the time of God is right.”
Umahi also defended the federal government’s road infrastructure projects, describing them as transformational and essential to national development. He dismissed criticisms over road conditions, urging constructive engagement rather than political blackmail.
