Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has ordered the shutdown of Onitsha Main Market and launched a crackdown on traders he accuses of engaging in economic sabotage.

In a statement, the government condemned what it described as a “protracted economic sabotage cloaked as ‘Monday sit-at-home’”, warning that authorities would target all individuals and groups supporting the disruption.

“This first announcement will last for one week. If by next Monday the market is not open, the shutdown will be extended to one month,” the statement added, signaling a firm approach to restoring business activity in the state.

Governor Soludo’s directive also emphasizes accountability for civil servants. Workers who fail to report for duty on Mondays will forfeit their pay, according to the government. However, reports indicate that despite the warning, many schools and offices in Anambra remained closed, reflecting ongoing resistance to the Monday shutdown practice.

The government’s move is seen as part of broader efforts to combat economic disruptions and ensure the continuity of trade and public services in the state.
