Statistics Canada is set to recruit approximately 32,000 temporary workers across all provinces and territories ahead of the May 2026 Census, offering hourly pay of up to $31.32 (around N46,000) depending on the role.
The national statistics agency says the hires will support its nationwide data collection effort, which informs critical decisions in areas such as healthcare, education, housing, and transportation.
Applicants must be legally adults in their province or territory, Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or hold valid Canadian work permits, with a Canadian home address.
Roles and Responsibilities
Positions include enumerators, crew leaders, crew leader assistants, field operations supervisor assistants, and collection support unit operators. Most applicants will serve as enumerators or crew leaders, visiting households directly to collect census data.
- Enumerators: Earn $25.87/hour, typically working 20–40 hours/week from May to July 2026. Tasks include visiting households, following up on non-responses, and interacting with residents.
- Crew Leaders: Earn $31.32/hour, working around 40 hours/week from March to July 2026, coordinating field activities, supervising enumerators, and handling administrative duties.
Because much of the work involves door-to-door engagement, employees may claim authorized work-related expenses, such as mileage and parking costs.
Application and Recruitment Process
Applicants must apply online via the Census jobs portal, with recruitment running from November 4, 2025, to July 31, 2026. Early applications may improve chances of being matched to roles.
The selection process includes initial screening, reference checks, interviews for crew leader roles, and security clearance. Only candidates selected for further consideration will be contacted.
Statistics Canada emphasizes that this large-scale recruitment effort is crucial for producing accurate population statistics, which directly support government planning and services nationwide.
