The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Benue State says six suspected vandals have been arrested over an attempt to cut and steal power transmission cables near the NNPC Depot in Apir.
Officials said the operation — carried out with the support of local youths in the area — disrupted what they described as a coordinated effort targeting PHCN/TCN facilities.
Those arrested were identified as Shiaondo David Iorshenge, described as the prime suspect, along with Terungwa Asombo, Nomyar Bemdoo, Tyoakura Apino Christopher, Terhemba Iortuhwa Victor and Musa Abdullahi.
Benue State Commandant, Dr. Yakubu Ibrahim Bitrus, said the arrests followed heightened surveillance around critical infrastructure during the festive season.
“In a proactive move to ensure public safety and protect government infrastructures at all levels, I deployed 1,780 personnel across all 23 local government areas during the festive season,” he said.
Bitrus praised officers for their vigilance and urged host communities to take ownership of security around national assets that directly serve them.
“Let this be a clear warning to enemies of national security: Benue State will not be a safe haven for your nefarious activities. Protection of critical national assets and infrastructure is non-negotiable,” he added.
The NSCDC said investigations are ongoing and the suspects will be prosecuted.
The agency has repeatedly warned that cable theft and infrastructure vandalism not only disrupt electricity supply but also put lives at risk and cost the government billions in repairs.
