Former Super Eagles head coach Philippe Troussier has named eight countries he believes have what it takes to lift the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy as the tournament gets underway in Morocco.
The 70-year-old tactician described the upcoming championship as one of the most competitive in recent history, pointing to the growing quality and depth across African football.
Speaking to Egyptian outlet Filgoal, Troussier said Morocco are leading the pack as favourites, but warned that several heavyweight nations are equally capable of going all the way.
“I’m confident that the AFCON will be strong and competitive,” Troussier said. “Morocco lead, along with Ivory Coast, Senegal, Algeria, South Africa, Cameroon, Nigeria and Egypt.”
The Frenchman’s list includes a blend of reigning champions, former winners and emerging contenders, underlining the unpredictable nature of Africa’s flagship football tournament.
Troussier is widely respected on the continent, having previously managed national teams including Morocco, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and South Africa, giving his assessment added weight.
Tournament hosts Morocco began their AFCON 2025 campaign on a positive note, recording a 2-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday night to raise early expectations among home supporters.
Whether Troussier’s prediction will hold remains to be seen, particularly with Ivory Coast entering the competition as defending champions and several dark horses eager to upset the established order.
