The Imo State Police Command has commenced an orderly-room trial for seven police officers accused of extortion, unprofessional conduct and abuse of power, following public complaints and the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing their actions.
The development was confirmed by the state police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, who said the officers were identified after members of the public petitioned the command over their conduct during routine operations.
According to the police, some of the accused officers were captured on video during a joint task force operation at the Seven-and-a-Half Junction in Obowo Local Government Area, an incident that triggered internal investigations.
Those facing disciplinary proceedings include Inspector Eyo Udo of the Anti-Vice Unit, Inspector Peter Nweke of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Inspector Ita Asuquo of the Search and Flush Unit, Sergeant Chukwuka Ekwueme of the Anti-Vice Unit, and Police Constables Onuwa Samuel, Patchris David, and Amos Sunny, all attached to the Anti-Vice Unit.
Mr Okoye disclosed that personnel from other security agencies involved in the operation have been handed over to their respective authorities for appropriate disciplinary action.
He stressed that the orderly-room trial would be “thorough, transparent, and in full compliance with Nigeria Police Force regulations,” adding that the outcome of the proceedings would be made public.
Reaffirming the command’s commitment to accountability, the police spokesman urged residents to continue reporting misconduct through the Complaints Response Unit (CRU), insisting that the Imo State Police Command would not shield officers found guilty of unprofessional behaviour.
