Imo State Police Command has dismissed a viral social media video alleging that 14 passengers were kidnapped at the Umuowa–Ihitte junction in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area. The widely shared clip claimed the passengers were abducted while travelling from Owerri to Aba on 1 December.
Police authorities said the footage was misleading and traced it to an unrelated incident that occurred earlier in the year, noting that it was being circulated again to stir unnecessary fear. Investigators confirmed that the supposed kidnapping did not take place as claimed in the recent posts.
The command explained that the original incident had been thoroughly addressed at the time, with security operatives ensuring the safe release of those involved. It stressed that the resurfacing of the video was an attempt to misinform the public.
In a statement issued on Tuesday night, police spokesperson DSP Okoye Henry urged residents to disregard the claims and avoid sharing unverified content capable of heightening public anxiety. He described the viral video as a deliberate attempt to create tension during a sensitive period.
Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma also cautioned against the spread of false alerts, saying they undermine security efforts and distract from genuine threats. He assured citizens that the command has strengthened patrols and surveillance along the affected route.
The police chief added that security personnel are working closely with other agencies and community-based outfits to ensure commuters remain safe ahead of the festive season, when travel activity typically increases.
Residents were encouraged to stay calm, remain vigilant, and promptly report suspicious movement or activities to the nearest police station to support ongoing security operations across the state.
