Heartland Football Club has announced a new international partnership programme designed to export players abroad, generate long-term revenue and restore the club’s competitive identity following its drop to the Nigeria National League last season.
Technical Manager Emmanuel Amuneke, speaking at a press briefing in Owerri, said the club is embarking on a deliberate rebuilding process that reflects its historic pedigree. He reminded journalists that Heartland — once a CAF Champions League finalist in 2009 — still has the talent and foundation to return to elite football, but now needs modern structures and global collaboration to get there.
Amuneke outlined a plan centred on creating clear development pathways for young players, enabling them to be scouted and transferred to clubs across Europe, the Americas and Asia. “This club has too much potential to remain where it is,” he said, adding that sustainable growth must come from proper revenue systems and better player welfare.
To drive the initiative, the club is partnering with Dutch scout and long-time African football operator Tom Sanders. After watching Heartland’s training sessions, Sanders said the squad possesses raw ability capable of meeting European standards — but stressed that the right technical framework must be put in place first.
He highlighted the growing role of data, analytics and video technology in global scouting, urging Heartland to build a robust database and performance library. “Every player needs data in today’s football,” he said, noting that European clubs rely heavily on platforms such as Wyscout.
Sanders also called for upgrades in the club’s infrastructure, describing some training areas as “too amateur” for a side with top-level ambitions. He recommended improved pitches, stronger academy setups and a unified philosophy running from youth teams to the senior squad.
Imo FA Chairman, Charles Dike, hailed the initiative as a “right step in the right direction,” pledging the association’s support and noting that the partnership will extend opportunities to talented players across the state. Amuneke said the ultimate goal is to restore Heartland’s identity and inspire a new generation of youngsters to dream of wearing the club’s colours again. Formal agreements are expected to be concluded in the coming days.
