Voting has officially commenced in parts of Anambra State as the November 8, 2025, governorship election enters its critical early hours. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed that polling has started at several units in Njikoka Local Government Area, including RA 10: Enugwu Ukwu II, PU 003 & PU 004.
INEC has urged citizens to exercise their voting rights responsibly, posting reminders to social media emphasizing: “Be counted, be heard. Step out and vote peacefully. Every vote must count.” The commission also reiterated warnings against vote-selling, cautioning that “your vote is not for sale.”
The start of voting comes after initial delays in other areas. Observers reported that as of 8:30 a.m., officials had yet to arrive at multiple polling units in Awka, raising concerns about smooth operations and voter turnout in the state capital.
Anambra is one of eight states holding off-cycle governorship elections in 2025, with the governorship race attracting 16 candidates. Incumbent Governor Charles Soludo (APGA) faces strong challenges from George Moghalu (LP), Cyprian Otti (APM), and Jude Ezenwafor (PDP), among others. Analysts predict high voter engagement given the crowded field and the stakes for APGA’s continuity in the state.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan has assured that 24,000 personnel have been deployed, with 5,718 out of 5,720 polling units operational, citing two units left inactive due to lack of registered voters. The commission emphasized that all eligible citizens would have the opportunity to cast their votes.
Observers and political analysts are closely monitoring the conduct of the election. Accredited groups, including JDPC, have expressed hopes for transparency and efficiency, warning against logistical lapses and urging officials to ensure timely commencement across all units.
As voting progresses, attention now shifts to voter turnout, adherence to electoral guidelines, and live results, which will determine the next governor of Anambra State. Citizens and political watchers are advised to follow official INEC updates to track developments and outcomes.
