The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has guaranteed the safety and welfare of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members participating as ad hoc staff in Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, gave the assurance during a media briefing in Awka on Wednesday, noting that no corps member would be denied their election duty allowances. He emphasized that the commission had made adequate provisions for logistics, security, and welfare to ensure a smooth and credible exercise.

According to Amupitan, NYSC members play a vital role in the electoral process, serving as neutral facilitators critical to ensuring transparency and fairness. “We are doing everything to ensure they are easily identifiable in uniform and not replaced by partisan individuals,” he stated.

He disclosed that INEC had reached an agreement with relevant stakeholders to ensure prompt payment of allowances, adding that any pending balances would be swiftly resolved. “The commission has provided everything necessary for this election, including the welfare of the corps members,” he said.

On security arrangements, Amupitan assured that security agencies under the coordination of the Nigerian Police had finalized measures to protect all election personnel and materials. He said tactical operations had already begun across the state to guarantee the safety of both voters and officials.

“Even as we speak, security operatives are already raking and mopping up sensitive areas. These efforts will continue throughout the election period to ensure no breaches of peace,” he added.

The INEC boss reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to credible elections, urging corps members and voters to remain calm and cooperate with officials for a peaceful and transparent poll.
