A family in Abia State is demanding justice after their son, Mr. Wisdom Okorie Akobundu, allegedly died under suspicious circumstances while being interrogated by officers of the Bende Police Division.
The deceased, a native of Ozuitem in Bende Local Government Area, was reportedly invited by the police for questioning over an undisclosed matter but was said to have been subjected to severe torture that led to his death.
Speaking during a condolence visit by the Founder of the Chima Anyaso Foundation, Dr. Chimaobi Anyaso, the victim’s father, Mr. Festus Okorie, called for a full investigation into the incident. He said the family would not rest until those responsible are held accountable, warning that the matter must not be “swept under the carpet.”
Okorie described his late son as a responsible young man from a family known for integrity and good conduct. He urged the authorities to ensure justice is served, not only for Wisdom but to prevent similar tragedies from recurring.
During the visit, Anyaso expressed shock over the incident, saying he was moved to act after reading about the case on social media. He condemned the alleged police brutality and described the death as “a heartbreaking reminder of the need for accountability in law enforcement.”
Anyaso, who was accompanied by Eze Patrick Ude, a traditional ruler in Bende, and other community leaders, urged the Abia State Police Command to ensure a transparent investigation and prosecute anyone found culpable.
The grieving family expressed appreciation to Anyaso and his delegation for standing by them in their moment of sorrow, stressing that their son’s life must not be wasted in vain.
