The Lagos State Government has inaugurated the Institute of Disaster Management at the Igando Relief Camp, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s emergency preparedness and response capacity.

The new institute, which will be supervised by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), is designed to serve as a national training hub for disaster management professionals and first responders across the country. The initiative aims to strengthen response systems, enhance technical skills, and build resilience in the face of natural and man-made emergencies.

Speaking at a media briefing on the outcome of the three-day National State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMA) Conference held in Lagos, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the first cohort of trainees will be admitted in December 2025.

“The Institute will equip responders with the expertise needed to manage disasters effectively,” he said. “It symbolises growth, knowledge, and resilience — and represents our collective commitment to a safer, better-prepared Nigeria.”

Oke-Osanyintolu praised the leadership of SEMAs from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory for their participation in the maiden conference, describing it as a “turning point for Nigeria’s emergency management system.”

During the closing session, framed portraits were presented to state emergency agencies as a gesture of unity and shared purpose. “That signature is more than ink,” Oke-Osanyintolu noted. “It’s a personal reminder of collaboration, respect, and our unwavering commitment to saving lives and property.”

He expressed deep appreciation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his continued investment in disaster management infrastructure and to partners such as NEMA, IOM, and Eight Medical for their unwavering support.

“From management to field officers, logistics teams, drivers, and every staff member who worked behind the scenes, your commitment made this possible,” he said. “Together, we have shown what true collaboration and resilience look like.”
