Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has rewarded a man with ₦10 million after he completed a 600-kilometre trek from Lagos to Abakaliki in his honour.

The trekker, whose identity has since gone viral on social media, reportedly began the arduous journey weeks ago as a personal tribute to the governor’s leadership. He arrived in Abakaliki to a warm reception from residents before being hosted at Government House.

Governor Nwifuru, visibly impressed by the man’s determination, praised his courage and resilience. He described the trek as a rare display of loyalty and sacrifice, promising to continue policies that inspire confidence among Ebonyi’s citizens at home and abroad.

The ₦10 million reward has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters hailed the governor’s generosity, saying the gesture would change the man’s life and encourage others to show dedication in unique ways. Critics, however, argued that such funds could have been channelled into social welfare and infrastructure projects.

Political observers note that the spectacle reflects a growing trend in Nigeria where citizens undertake symbolic treks, marathons, and pilgrimages to show support for political leaders. While some view the acts as genuine expressions of admiration, others dismiss them as publicity stunts.

Governor Nwifuru maintained that his administration remains committed to improving lives across Ebonyi, stressing that his support for the trekker was both a personal and symbolic gesture.

The extraordinary journey, covering more than 600 kilometres of highways, forests, and rural paths, has cemented the man’s place in Ebonyi’s political folklore — and reignited debate about the relationship between leaders and citizens in Nigeria.
