US Midterm Elections: Democrats Seek to Regain Control of Congress as Voters Cast Ballots

Americans are heading to the polls in the US midterm elections, with Democrats seeking to regain control of Congress from Republicans and limit President Donald Trump’s legislative powers.

Voting has begun in Vermont, with results expected to emerge as polling stations close across different parts of the country.

The US Congress comprises the House of Representatives and the Senate, with elections held every two years. Midterm elections take place halfway through a president’s four-year term and are widely viewed as an important test of the administration’s political standing.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are being contested, alongside 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats. Several state-level positions, including governorships, are also on the ballot. Members of the House serve two-year terms, while senators serve six-year terms.

Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, while Democrats are campaigning to win enough seats to take control of either or both.

A Democratic majority could give the party greater power to block parts of Trump’s legislative agenda and launch congressional investigations into the president and his administration.

Former President Barack Obama has been actively campaigning for Democratic candidates in key battleground states. He has argued that Americans are dissatisfied with conditions under Republican leadership and are seeking a change in direction.

Trump, meanwhile, has criticised Democratic candidates, describing them as “the most extreme and dangerous slate of candidates in American history”.

The elections are also taking place against the backdrop of the conflict involving Iran, which has become a major political issue in the United States. The supplied report says the US launched what it described as defensive strikes against Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz hours before voting began.

The conflict, which reportedly started in February, has attracted criticism from members of both parties over concerns about Trump’s authority to conduct military operations without congressional approval.

The cost of living is another major concern among voters. Rising expenses, reportedly worsened by the impact of the conflict, could influence how Americans vote as they decide which party should control Congress.
