Yunusa Tanko Accepts Peter Obi’s Northern Political Adviser Role Ahead of 2027

Yunusa Tanko has accepted his appointment as Political Adviser for Northern Nigeria to Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tanko announced his new role in a statement posted on his X account on Wednesday. He said the assignment would focus on political engagement, mobilisation and coordination across Northern Nigeria.
The appointment comes after Tanko’s two-year tenure as National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement. He said the movement established structures across the country during his time as coordinator, including regional and grassroots coordination systems.
“With deep gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose, I write to formally accept my new assignment as Political Adviser, Northern Nigeria, to His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi,” Tanko said.
Tanko said his new responsibilities would require working with the movement’s structures, stakeholders, communities and supporters across the region. He added that the assignment would require his “full attention and presence across Northern Nigeria.”
He also announced that Dr Moses Paul, popularly known as Dr Mo, would take over as National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement. Tanko described Paul as a member of the movement from its early days, citing his involvement in civic engagement, grassroots mobilisation and communication.
Tanko said his tenure also saw the establishment of a National Advisory Council, regional and grassroots coordination structures, the Obidient.com online mobilisation platform and an election-results monitoring system linked to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s results-viewing platform.
He expressed confidence that Paul would provide the national coordination needed as the 2027 elections approach. Tanko also thanked Obi, movement leaders, coordinators, volunteers and supporters, saying the structures developed during his tenure would serve as a foundation for his new assignment in Northern Nigeria.
