Portugal FA Backs Cristiano Ronaldo to Continue With National Team

The Portuguese Football Federation has thrown its support behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s continued involvement with the national team, with president Pedro Proença describing the veteran forward as an icon of Portuguese football.

Proença said Ronaldo remains an important member of Portugal’s squad whenever he is fit and available. He praised the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s contribution to the country over more than two decades and described him as a major symbol of Portuguese identity.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in history. He has dedicated more than two decades to Portuguese football and is the ultimate symbol of Portuguese identity,” Proença said in a post on the federation’s X account on Monday.

The federation president also defended Ronaldo’s continued selection, arguing that his performances and sporting ability justify his place in the squad. He said the forward would remain part of the national team whenever he is fit and ready to play.

Proença also addressed reports of a disagreement between Ronaldo and Portugal coach Jorge Jesus. Rather than treating the dispute as a major problem, he described it as a misunderstanding that should be resolved privately between the parties.

“What happened between him and Jorge Jesus was simply a misunderstanding that needs to be resolved internally,” Proença said, adding that Ronaldo remains firmly connected to the national team. He also pointed to Ronaldo’s role as captain in the first of Portugal’s four matches.

The federation chief said Ronaldo’s decision to continue playing for Portugal reflects his strong attachment to the national team. Proença noted that the forward could have ended his international career at the World Cup but chose to continue because of his relationship with the country and its supporters.

With Portugal’s four matches now completed, Proença believes there is an opportunity for Ronaldo and Jesus to settle their differences. He said Ronaldo remains part of Portugal’s football legacy and will continue to be available whenever the coach wants him.
