Oil Prices Rise as Fresh Strait of Hormuz Attacks Rattle Markets

Oil prices climbed on Wednesday as renewed attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz raised fresh concerns about the security of Middle Eastern energy supplies, while stock markets came under pressure.

The latest market moves came after reports that Iran had increased attacks on tankers passing through the strategic waterway. The UK Maritime Trade Operations has reported nine attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters so far in October, highlighting the growing risks facing commercial shipping.

The concerns emerged despite a recent recovery in oil exports from the region. Data reported this week showed that Middle Eastern crude exports had moved back towards, and on some days exceeded, pre-war levels, helping ease fears of a prolonged supply shortage.

That recovery had pushed Brent crude below $100 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate below $90, offering some relief to markets worried about inflation. The renewed attacks, however, have raised doubts about whether the recovery in energy flows can be sustained if shipping risks continue to increase.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a crucial route for global energy supplies, making any prolonged disruption potentially significant for crude oil and fuel markets. Recent incidents reported by UKMTO include tankers being struck by unidentified projectiles, with some vessels suffering fires or damage while crews were reported safe.

Markets also remained sensitive to developments elsewhere in the region. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis have claimed further attacks on Saudi Arabia, while Saudi-backed forces have intensified operations against the group around strategically important areas near the Red Sea.

The oil market is therefore balancing two competing developments: improving regional export volumes and rising risks to the ships transporting those supplies. Analysts say the latest escalation has made prices particularly sensitive to geopolitical headlines and any signs that energy flows through the region could be disrupted.

The renewed uncertainty also weighed on equities after another record session on Wall Street. Nvidia continued its strong rally towards a $6 trillion market value, helping drive gains in technology stocks, but rising energy and geopolitical risks remained a concern for investors.
