Jorge Jesus Explains Ronaldo Decision as Portugal Captain Leaves Camp

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has defended his decision to leave Cristiano Ronaldo out of the team’s first two Nations League matches, insisting the plan had been discussed with the captain before the controversy surrounding his departure from camp.
Speaking at a press conference in Copenhagen, Jesus said Ronaldo’s omission was based on his physical condition and was similar to the approach taken with Bruno Fernandes. He said he had worked with Ronaldo for a year and was familiar with the forward’s ability to manage games played at short intervals.
Jesus said Ronaldo was not expected to play against Norway or Denmark under the plan they had agreed. However, he explained that he considered bringing him on late against Norway after Ronaldo warmed up before deciding that the match did not require his introduction.
The coach also rejected reports that Ronaldo had refused to train with Portugal. Jesus said the forward had completed gym, mobility and strength exercises as part of the team’s management of player fitness. He insisted Ronaldo had not refused to work with the squad.
Jesus acknowledged that Ronaldo was unhappy after warming up without being introduced against Norway. He said such a reaction was understandable but maintained that the decision was his responsibility as coach and that players’ status should not determine team selection.
The coach also said Portugal Football Federation president Pedro Proença spoke with him after reports about the situation emerged. Jesus maintained that he had already explained his position to Ronaldo and considered the matter resolved.
However, Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen shortly after Jesus’s press conference and ahead of the Nations League match against Denmark. Ronaldo said on social media that his decision followed a conversation with Proença and that he would explain the reasons for his departure “in due course.”
Jesus insisted that no player, including Ronaldo, could force him to change a decision once he had made it. Portugal went on to defeat Denmark 4-2 without Ronaldo, with João Cancelo, Gonçalo Ramos, Vitinha and João Félix scoring for the European champions.
