Harry Kane Wins 2026 Ballon d’Or, Becomes First Englishman to Claim Award Since 2001

Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first English footballer to receive the prestigious men’s award since former Liverpool and England striker Michael Owen in 2001.

The Bayern Munich striker was honoured at a ceremony in London after an outstanding season in which he reportedly scored 73 goals for club and country. Kane finished ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, who placed second and third respectively.

The achievement adds Kane’s name to the distinguished list of English Ballon d’Or winners, which includes Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen. The England captain described the moment as beyond his wildest dreams, expressing particular excitement about receiving the award in London.

“Wow, I’m almost speechless,” Kane said during his acceptance speech. He thanked France Football, Bayern Munich, England and his former club Tottenham Hotspur, while reflecting on the difficult route that took him to the top of world football.

Kane also used the occasion to encourage young players to pursue their ambitions, pointing to the loan spells and setbacks he experienced before establishing himself among the game’s leading goalscorers.

He later acknowledged the contribution of his teammates, explaining that the award was an individual honour made possible by the players who created chances, occupied defenders and supported his performances for club and country. Bayern teammates Michael Olise and Luis Díaz, alongside England stars Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham, were among those he credited.

The announcement followed confusion earlier in the day after three separate articles reportedly appeared on the Ballon d’Or website naming Kane, Mbappé and Yamal as the winner. The articles were subsequently removed, and the ceremony reportedly began 45 minutes later than planned because of traffic in London.

Former England defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher welcomed Kane’s victory, describing him as an outstanding player whose career deserved recognition. Carragher also argued that Kane’s move from Tottenham to Bayern Munich had strengthened his chances of competing for major individual honours.

England manager Thomas Tuchel congratulated Kane, calling the award deserved and praising his performances and leadership of the national team. Prince William, patron of the Football Association, also celebrated the achievement, describing Kane as a remarkable player and captain.

The supplied rankings list Mbappé second, Yamal third, Manchester City’s Rodri fourth and Lionel Messi fifth. Kane was also named Men’s Striker of the Year. Other reported winners included Alexia Putellas in the women’s Ballon d’Or category, Lamine Yamal as Men’s Young Talent of the Year and Paris Saint-Germain as Men’s Club of the Year.

Bukayo Saka reportedly received the Socrates Award for humanitarian work, while Spain coach Luis de la Fuente was named Men’s Coach of the Year.

Kane’s reported victory would mark a major milestone for English football, ending a 25-year wait for a men’s Ballon d’Or winner from England. However, the award details and results should be confirmed against official announcements before publication.
