Eight Zamfara Lawmakers Quit APC Over Insecurity, 32 Months of Unpaid Salaries

Eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have announced their resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing worsening insecurity, alleged injustice and unpaid salaries and allowances.

The lawmakers said they could no longer remain in the party because of what they described as its failure to adequately address security challenges affecting their constituents, particularly in rural communities. The eight are Aliyu Kagara, Ibrahim Bakura, Faruk Dosara, Bashir Masama, Muktaru Kaura, Nasiru Abdullahi, Bashar Bello and Bashar Aliyu.

Kagara, who represents Talata Mafara South, said the lawmakers had gone 32 months without receiving salaries, allowances and other entitlements. He also accused the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal of failing to give sufficient attention to insecurity in rural areas.

“What we are challenging Governor Lawal’s administration about is even worse now compared to previous times, so we have seen no reason to continue remaining in the APC,” Kagara said, adding that constituents who elected them to address their security concerns were not receiving adequate attention.

The Zamfara APC, however, said it had not received official copies of the lawmakers’ resignation letters. State Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Birnin-Magaji said the party had only seen the letters circulating on social media and was waiting for formal correspondence through the lawmakers’ political wards and local government structures.

“We all saw it on social media platforms, but whenever we receive the copies officially, we would communicate with you on our stand,” Birnin-Magaji said. He added that the party was not aware of any grievances from the lawmakers before the resignation letters emerged.

The lawmakers’ exit follows earlier disagreements within the Zamfara House of Assembly and the APC. They were reportedly suspended before their resignation over allegations that they had attempted to impeach the Speaker of the Assembly about a year ago.

The latest development adds to the political realignment in Zamfara ahead of the 2027 elections. The lawmakers have not publicly announced another political party they intend to join, while the APC says it will state its position after receiving their resignation letters through the appropriate channels.
