25-Year-Old Worker Dies After Old Building Collapses During Demolition in Nnewi

A 25-year-old worker, Bakeru Iwal, has died after part of an old building he was helping to demolish collapsed on him in Otolo-Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when the structure suddenly caved in during demolition, trapping Iwal beneath the debris.

Residents and eyewitnesses at the scene said Iwal was among the workers engaged in the demolition when the section of the building gave way.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said officers from the Otolo Divisional Headquarters responded to the scene after receiving the report.

Ikenga said the area was cordoned off while police documented the scene and began preliminary investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

The deceased, who was identified as Bakeru Iwal, was evacuated to a mortuary for preservation pending an autopsy and other necessary examinations, according to the police.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Ama, directed that the investigation be conducted professionally and thoroughly to establish what led to the incident and determine whether anyone bears responsibility.

The police command urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to continue, adding that further updates would be provided as necessary.
