Super Eagles Face Injury Crisis as Six Players Race Against Time for September Qualifiers

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are facing an early-season injury setback, with at least six players sidelined as clubs settle into new campaigns and the September international window approaches.
The injuries could have consequences beyond the players’ club roles, with some now facing a fight to regain starting places while others are certain or likely to miss Nigeria’s upcoming qualifiers.
Getafe midfielder Christantus Uche has suffered the biggest setback after undergoing surgery for a serious right-knee injury sustained during a pre-season friendly against Monaco on August 6. The 23-year-old suffered multiple ligament and meniscus tears and has been ruled out for the rest of the season. His absence is also expected to keep him out of Nigeria’s September qualifiers and potentially the tournament finals.
Valencia striker Sadiq Umar has also been sidelined with a right hamstring injury suffered after scoring in his side’s 3-1 victory over Deportivo de La Coruña. The 29-year-old had completed the match but reported for training two days later with a limp. Valencia have started a rehabilitation programme for him but have not announced a return date, leaving his availability for Nigeria uncertain.
Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru is expected to spend at least three weeks out after suffering a tear in his right thigh during the club’s 1-0 Serie A victory over Bologna. The injury is particularly frustrating because he had recently established himself as a starter under Gennaro Gattuso following an encouraging pre-season. His availability for the Super Eagles’ September games remains in doubt.
Porto defender Zaidu Sanusi is facing about two months on the sidelines after suffering a right adductor injury during a 3-0 win over Académico de Viseu. Sanusi had started every minute of Porto’s league campaign before being forced off in the 17th minute, making him another confirmed absentee for Nigeria’s September qualifiers and leaving coach Eric Chelle with a defensive selection problem.
Marseille midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi has also suffered a knee injury after the club’s 2-0 defeat to Monaco. The 23-year-old is yet to establish himself as a regular starter under new coach Bruno Genesio, and the setback could further delay his push for a more prominent role. His September involvement with Nigeria is less certain, given his limited international experience so far.
Amedspor winger Yira Sor completes the list after suffering a Grade 2B hamstring injury that is expected to keep him out for six weeks. Sor had only recently joined the Turkish club from Genk for €3 million and was beginning to make an impact, scoring in the 2-1 comeback win over Trabzonspor before the injury disrupted his promising start.
With injuries hitting players across defence, midfield and attack, Chelle could be forced to rethink parts of his squad for the September window. For several of the affected players, however, the immediate battle is also at club level, where missed games could allow rivals to establish themselves before they return.
