La Liga President Tebas Demands Severe Sanctions for Man City If Found Guilty of Financial Breaches

La Liga president Javier Tebas has called for Manchester City to face the “most severe sanction” available if the club is found to have breached financial regulations.

The comments follow reports that an independent panel had found Manchester City guilty on all but one of 115 charges relating to alleged breaches of Premier League rules. However, the English top flight has not officially announced any verdict, and no potential punishment has been confirmed.

Manchester City, backed by Abu Dhabi ownership, have consistently denied the allegations. Club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak also issued a defiant statement, expressing confidence that the club would be vindicated.

Possible sanctions, if breaches are established, could include a substantial points deduction or expulsion from the Premier League. Other clubs are also reportedly seeking legal advice over potential compensation.

Speaking at a football performance and health summit in London, Tebas said he had been raising concerns about Manchester City since 2017. He argued that consistent enforcement of financial regulations was essential to protect the integrity and sustainability of football.

Tebas said any proven rule violations should attract severe punishment, regardless of the scale of the breaches. He added that the case could have wider implications for the Premier League and European football.

The La Liga chief also called on the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to review its decision to overturn a two-year European competition ban imposed on City by UEFA in 2020. Tebas argued that the earlier sanctions had been lifted in a questionable manner and said subsequent developments supported UEFA’s original position.

Manchester City, who have been owned by Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi United Group since 2008, have won eight Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League crown, alongside other trophies, during their rise in English and European football.
