Fresh bandit attacks in Kano State have left one Almajiri dead and an All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman abducted, deepening security concerns across communities in the state.
The latest attack occurred in Beli village near Zarewa town in Rogo Local Government Area on Monday evening. Gunmen reportedly stormed the community and abducted Alhaji Abdullahi Beli, the APC chairman in Rogo LGA, from his home. An Almajiri boy was also killed during the violence.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers caused panic in the community as sporadic gunfire rang out during the operation. Beli was reportedly taken from his family shortly after returning from a party engagement in nearby Zarewa.
Kano APC Publicity Secretary, Auwalu Sojo, confirmed the incident and said the party chairman remained in the custody of his abductors. He added that security agencies had been notified and deployed search teams to locate and rescue him.
The latest incident comes amid a string of deadly attacks across Kano. At least five people have reportedly been killed in separate attacks in the state in less than a week, while several others have been abducted or injured.
Just days earlier, Garba Buba, the APC chairman of Rantan Ward in Bebeji Local Government Area, was killed after gunmen invaded the community. Another resident, Sulaiman Zunduma, was also killed during the attack. Buba was reportedly shot at his home and later died in hospital, while Zunduma died at the scene.
Earlier, three residents of Chiromawa in Garun-Mallam Local Government Area were killed and five others injured in another suspected bandit attack. The council chairman, Aminu Salisu Kadawa, confirmed the incident and also reported the abduction of Sarkin Noman Jihar Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Nadabo Chiromawa.
Police later said Yusuf Nadabo had been rescued from his abductors and reunited with his family unharmed. However, the police command had not officially commented on the reported abduction of Abdullahi Beli at the time of the report.
The wave of violence is unfolding days before the expected lifting of the ban on political campaigns ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, raising fresh concerns about security in communities across Kano and the ability of political activities to proceed safely.
