Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has joined political leaders and the Ambrose Alli University (AAU) community in mourning the death of Chief Daniel Osi Orbih, former PDP leader and Chairman of the university’s Governing Council.
Orbih’s family announced his death on Monday, August 31, 2026. His younger brother, Francis Orbih, confirmed the development in a statement, marking the loss of a veteran political figure whose career spanned several decades of public service in Edo State and Nigeria.
Okpebholo, in a condolence message issued on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, described Orbih as a bridge-builder and voice of reason. He said the former AAU council chairman’s death was a major loss to his family, Edo State and the university community.
The governor also praised Orbih’s contribution to the development of Ambrose Alli University. He said Orbih remained committed to the institution’s progress during his tenure as Chairman of the Governing Council and helped strengthen the relationship between the Edo State Government and the university.
AAU management also expressed shock over the death. The university said Orbih had worked to improve the institution’s welfare, reputation and stability while promoting academic excellence and good governance. The statement was signed by Otunba Mike Aladenika, Principal Assistant Registrar and Head of Information, Protocol and Public Relations.
The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described Orbih as a prominent statesman whose contributions to politics and democratic governance would remain significant. State Chairman Nosa Ogieva-Okunbor and Secretary Hilary Otsu said his influence extended across communities and generations.
Former Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki also mourned Orbih, recalling his years as PDP chairman in Edo and later as National Vice Chairman, South-South. Obaseki said Orbih played an important role in the development of the party and left a notable mark on Edo State’s political history.
As tributes continue to come in, Governor Okpebholo prayed for strength for Orbih’s wife, children, relatives, friends and colleagues. He also expressed hope that the late politician and education administrator’s legacy of public service would continue to inspire students, educators and future leaders.
