Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has celebrated the re-election of his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, as governor of Osun State after a closely contested governorship election.
Davido took to X on Sunday shortly after the final results were announced, posting a brief message celebrating the victory. “We did it Unc,” the singer wrote, alongside a video in which he was seen on the floor as his aide, Israel, congratulated him.
The singer had played an active role in his uncle’s campaign and repeatedly expressed confidence that the incumbent governor would retain his position. His latest celebration came after Adeleke secured 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who received 444,815 votes.
Adeleke, who contested under the Accord Party, won in 19 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victories in 11. The results showed strong support for the incumbent across several areas, including Ede North, Ede South, Iwo, Ife Central, Ife East, Osogbo, Ilesa West and Odo Otin.
Oyebamiji, however, maintained significant support in areas including Irewole, Isokan, Olorunda, Atakumosa East and West, Ilesa East, Boripe, Irepodun and Obokun. The African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third in the contest.
The State Returning Officer, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, declared Adeleke the winner at about 7:24am on Sunday. He said 1,010,684 voters were accredited, while 985,079 valid votes were recorded from 1,005,800 total votes cast.
Ogunwole said Adeleke had fulfilled the legal requirements for victory after party agents signed the results. He subsequently returned the incumbent governor elected for another term in office.
The result marks another major political victory for the Adeleke family, while Davido’s public reaction adds a celebrity dimension to an election that attracted intense political attention across Osun State. His celebration also reflects the singer’s continued involvement in his uncle’s political journey.
