Seun Kuti Breaks Silence on Viral Claims He Stormed Out of Peller’s Wedding Over Wizkid-Fela Debate

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has dismissed viral claims that he angrily walked out of Peller’s wedding after a joke referencing the controversial debate over whether Wizkid is “bigger than Fela.”

The speculation gained momentum after a video circulated on social media showing Seun leaving the wedding venue while saying, “We are in the wrong place.” Many online users interpreted the moment as a reaction to jokes made by one of the event’s MCs about the long-running argument surrounding Fela Kuti’s legacy.

The incident quickly sparked widespread debate, with one of the event’s MCs publicly alleging that Seun has anger management issues. The claims further fueled conversations across social media, where many questioned whether the Afrobeat star had been offended by the remarks.

However, Seun has now set the record straight. Speaking at Fela’s Shrine in Lagos after being questioned by Fuji singer Malaika, he insisted that his departure had nothing to do with the jokes or any disagreement at the wedding.

“I left the Peller’s wedding about 8:30 pm. I came to the Shrine. There’s an event at the Shrine and I have to be there. But bloggers were saying I left angrily. Was I supposed to be dancing when I was hurriedly leaving the place for another event?” Seun said.

According to the singer, he remained at the wedding until the evening before heading to the Shrine for a scheduled engagement, stressing that his exit was simply due to prior commitments.

The controversy is linked to a heated online exchange earlier this year between Seun Kuti and Wizkid. During the dispute in January 2026, Wizkid declared that he was “bigger than Fela,” a statement that drew strong reactions from fans, celebrities and public figures, reigniting conversations about the enduring legacy of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

Although the debate continues to divide opinions online, Seun’s latest comments make it clear that his exit from Peller’s wedding was unrelated to the controversy and was instead driven by his obligation to attend an event at his father’s iconic Shrine.
