Real Madrid have won the race for one of world football’s brightest young talents after completing the signing of Ivorian winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in a blockbuster deal worth up to €140 million.
The Spanish giants fended off strong interest from Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain to secure the teenager’s signature, bringing an end to one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer. Diomande has now signed a seven-year contract at the Santiago Bernabéu, keeping him at the club until 2033.
Liverpool had been widely viewed as favourites for much of the transfer window, with Diomande seen as a long-term successor to Mohamed Salah on the right wing. However, reports indicate the player’s camp became concerned about the uncertainty surrounding the club’s new era under manager Andoni Iraola following Arne Slot’s departure.
According to The Athletic, Diomande believed Liverpool were entering a period of transition, making Real Madrid’s established winning project a more attractive destination. The chance to compete immediately for major honours, including the UEFA Champions League, ultimately tipped the balance in Madrid’s favour.
A decisive moment reportedly came when Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho personally contacted the player. Speaking about the negotiations, Diomande’s agent and Roc Nation’s Head of Global Football Recruitment, Nathan Campbell, revealed that Mourinho’s fluent French and detailed explanation of his tactical plans left a lasting impression.
“The final piece was Jose Mourinho,” Campbell said. “We didn’t realise Mourinho spoke fluent French. The time he took to speak with Yan about his ideas, the project and how he would fit into the team showed how much he valued him. That was the key to convincing him.”
Real Madrid agreed a package worth up to €140 million with RB Leipzig, including an initial €125 million fee and a further €15 million in performance-related add-ons. The deal also saw Los Blancos overtake Paris Saint-Germain, who had been in advanced discussions with both Leipzig and the player’s representatives before Madrid completed the transfer.
Beyond the financial package, Real Madrid reportedly impressed Diomande with a detailed long-term development plan. Club officials highlighted the progression of stars such as Vinícius Júnior as an example of how young attackers can grow into world-class players at the Bernabéu. For Liverpool, meanwhile, the search for Mohamed Salah’s eventual successor continues after missing out on their primary target.
