Liverpool have completed the signing of Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan, giving new manager Andoni Iraola another experienced option as the club deals with a shortage of fit defenders. The agreement includes an option for Liverpool to make the 27-year-old’s move permanent for about £47.14 million (€55 million).
Araujo will join Liverpool without a loan fee, with the Premier League club covering his wages during the season. The Uruguay international has also reportedly accepted a reduction in salary to make the move possible.
The deal comes at a difficult time for Liverpool’s defence. Ibrahima Konate has left for Real Madrid, while Joe Gomez is unavailable for the Premier League opener against Newcastle. Teenage defender Giovanni Leoni is also recovering from an ACL injury, while new signing Jeremy Jacquet has fitness concerns after a shoulder problem.
Araujo offers Iraola flexibility because he can operate both at centre-back and right-back. He arrives with more than 200 appearances for Barcelona and considerable experience at the highest level, including three La Liga titles.
The move also gives Araujo an opportunity to revive his career after a difficult period at Barcelona. He played only 11 La Liga matches last season following an extended absence from football and struggled to establish himself as a regular under Hansi Flick.
Barcelona had handed Araujo significant responsibility, with the defender previously serving as vice-captain and later among the club’s captains. His reduced role, however, made a temporary departure attractive to all sides as he looks for regular football and a fresh challenge.
Araujo said he had no hesitation about moving to Liverpool, describing the transfer as the right decision at this stage of his career. He is expected to train with his new team-mates this week as Liverpool prepare for the new Premier League campaign.
For Liverpool, the loan structure limits the immediate financial risk while leaving the door open for a permanent deal. If Araujo returns to his best form and stays fit, the £47m option could give the club the chance to secure an experienced defender at a potentially attractive price.
