Eyitayo Jegede, who represented the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2016 and 2020 Ondo State governorship elections, has resigned from the party with immediate effect.
Jegede communicated his decision in a letter dated August 7 and addressed to the PDP chairman of Owode/Imuagun Ward 11 in Akure South Local Government Area.
The resignation letter was obtained in Akure on Thursday by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), confirming his departure from the party after years of involvement in its political activities in the state.
“Kindly take this as a formal notice of my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, effective immediately,” Jegede stated in the letter.
He also asked the ward leadership to formally acknowledge receipt of his resignation, writing: “I will be glad if you will kindly acknowledge the receipt of this letter.”
Jegede was the PDP’s governorship candidate in Ondo State in 2016 and again in 2020. His resignation now marks a significant development in the political career of the senior lawyer and former governorship contender.
No reason was stated in the resignation letter for his decision to leave the PDP. The letter also did not indicate whether Jegede plans to join another political party or take a different political path.
His departure comes as political realignments continue to shape the landscape ahead of future elections, with the movement of prominent figures capable of affecting party structures and alliances in the state.
