Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested more than 20 suspects during a raid on a short-let apartment complex in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, as investigations into suspected financial crimes continue.
The intelligence-led operation was carried out in the early hours of Monday, July 27, at Mariton Apartments, located on Plot 30, QMB Road, Ikate, Lekki. Security operatives reportedly searched several apartments within the facility before taking multiple occupants into custody.
A senior EFCC official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly, confirmed the operation and said investigations were still at a preliminary stage.
“The operation was intelligence-driven. Yes, a number of suspects were arrested and investigations are continuing. We are profiling those arrested and examining items recovered during the operation. Further details will be made public at the appropriate time,” the official said.
Sources familiar with the operation disclosed that investigators questioned occupants of different apartments and recovered materials believed to be relevant to the ongoing probe. However, the EFCC has not released the identities of those arrested or disclosed the specific offences under investigation.
Some residents of the area alleged that certain apartments within the complex may have been used for internet-related crimes and other illegal activities. However, those claims remain unverified, and the EFCC has not officially linked any suspect, apartment owner or resident to any criminal offence.
The raid has drawn significant attention within the Lekki community, with residents and business operators describing it as one of the most notable anti-graft operations conducted in the area in recent months.
Witnesses also reported a noticeable drop in activity at the apartment complex after the operation, noting that the facility had previously maintained high occupancy levels. Investigators are now analysing recovered materials and conducting background checks to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to file criminal charges against any of the suspects.
