The Delta State Government has indefinitely suspended the Commissioner for Works (Highway and Urban Roads), Izeze Reuben, over allegations linking him to the assault of a senior aide to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
The suspension was announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Eze Emu, who said the decision was taken to allow security agencies to conduct an impartial investigation into the incident.
The alleged assault involved Simon Mudi, popularly known as Temple, the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Protocol. Mudi was reportedly attacked and injured during a political gathering at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in Effurun.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, including what triggered the altercation and the identities and roles of those involved, are now being investigated by the relevant security authorities.
The state government said suspending Izeze would enable investigators to carry out their work without interference and establish the facts surrounding the incident.
Mudi’s reported injuries have raised concerns within the state, particularly because he is an aide to the governor. The incident has also increased pressure for a full investigation into what happened at the PTI gathering.
The Delta State Government said it remains committed to maintaining law and order, protecting public safety and safeguarding human life. It stressed that those principles apply regardless of whether the situation involves government institutions or public officials.
No date has been given for the conclusion of the investigation or for a decision on whether the commissioner will return to office.
