Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has called on United States President Donald Trump and the international community to pay close attention to the Osun State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, 15 August 2026.
Davido made the appeal on Tuesday through his official X account, citing growing concerns over possible violence, intimidation and disruption of the democratic process during the election.
The singer said voters in Osun State should be able to exercise their constitutional rights freely and without fear. He urged the United States and other members of the international community to encourage Nigerian authorities to protect voters and ensure that every vote is respected.
“We no want bloodshed. We no want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election,” Davido wrote, directly tagging President Trump in his appeal.
The intervention comes amid a growing political controversy in Osun State involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the state government. The anti-graft agency had obtained an order to freeze government accounts while investigating suspected suspicious financial transactions.
The EFCC said it acted after observing what it described as suspicious movement of funds from the state accounts to other accounts since 2 August. The agency relied on provisions of the EFCC Act and the Money Laundering Act in seeking the freeze.
President Bola Tinubu later directed the EFCC to vacate the court order, saying he was concerned about the timing of the action and the impression it could create about federal government interference in the election. The Nigerian Bar Association President, Afam Osigwe, had also criticised the account freeze, describing a blanket restriction on a state government’s accounts as an abuse of power.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has since sued the EFCC, seeking ₦2 billion in damages over the action. Davido, who is the governor’s nephew, has now joined calls for international attention as the state heads towards a closely watched governorship election.
