A group of youths in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has taken to the streets to campaign against the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a 45-second video circulating online, the youths were seen moving through the streets while urging residents not to vote for the ruling party in the next presidential election.
The protesters accused President Bola Tinubu of worsening the economic hardship facing Nigerians, blaming what they described as bad governance for rising hunger and difficulties experienced by households.
“You get food for house? No, you get light for house? No. Hunger dey. Tinubu brought hunger through bad government,” the youths were heard chanting in the video.
Their action comes amid growing political activity in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections, with different political groups already positioning themselves for the contest.
The youths said the Tinubu administration had failed to adequately address the country’s economic challenges and argued that Nigerians should use the 2027 election to demand a change of government.
The development contrasts sharply with the position of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State governor, who has maintained that there would be no meaningful opposition to the APC in Rivers State in 2027.
Wike has said eligible voters in the state are united behind President Tinubu’s re-election bid. His political coalition, involving members of different political parties, has also been mobilising support for candidates backed by the former governor.
The street campaign by the youths, however, highlights the competing political sentiments already emerging in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections. Whether such grassroots opposition will translate into significant electoral support remains to be seen.
