Students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) have accused suspected Nigerian Army recruits of invading off-campus hostels in Osogbo, where they allegedly assaulted students, sexually harassed female residents and stole valuables during a late-night incident.
The alleged attack occurred on Monday night and reportedly involved newly recruited personnel believed to be attached to the Nigerian Army Depot in Osogbo. As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army had not issued an official statement responding to the allegations.
Witnesses claimed the recruits were earlier seen around the students’ community, where they visited entertainment spots before allegedly harassing young men and demanding money transfers into bank accounts. The situation later escalated, with the suspects reportedly moving into several student residential areas.
According to students, about 20 hostels, including Cristalag and Kings and Queens hostels, were affected. Male students alleged they were beaten during the raid, while several claimed their mobile phones and other personal belongings were taken.
Some female students also alleged that they were forced to strip and were sexually harassed during the incident. The claims have sparked outrage among students and residents, with many demanding an independent investigation and accountability for those responsible.
Reacting to the reports, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Professor Clement Adebooye, strongly condemned the incident, describing it as “gory.” He reportedly referred to the alleged perpetrators as “animals” who “should not be living among humans.”
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone D, also condemned the incident. Its Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, called on President Bola Tinubu and the Chief of Army Staff to ensure that those responsible are identified, investigated and prosecuted to deter similar incidents.
The allegations have renewed concerns over student safety in university communities. While investigations are expected to continue, affected students and stakeholders are urging the authorities to establish the facts and ensure justice is served if the allegations are confirmed.
