The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspects following the recovery of an item believed to be a human skull during a joint security operation in Ijio, Oyo State.
The arrests were announced in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, who said the operation was carried out after security agencies received credible intelligence about a man allegedly in possession of the suspected human skull.
Acting on the intelligence, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, directed a coordinated operation involving officers of the Nigeria Police Force and operatives of the Oyo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun Corps.
The operation led to the arrest of Shittu Isah, a resident of the Kajola area of Ijio, while the suspected human skull was recovered and taken into police custody as evidence.
According to the police, Isah allegedly confessed during interrogation that he exhumed the suspected human skull from a Muslim cemetery in Ijio. He also reportedly admitted that he did not act alone, prompting investigators to arrest Tunde Ajibade, who is currently assisting with the ongoing investigation.
Police authorities said the recovered exhibit has been preserved for forensic examination to determine whether it is indeed a human skull and to provide further evidence that could assist the investigation.
The command added that detectives are working to establish the motive behind the alleged crime and identify any other individuals who may have participated in the incident.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, the Oyo State Police Command urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information that could help security agencies prevent and combat crime.
