A major security operation in Imo State has dealt a fresh blow to armed criminal networks after troops of Operation UDO KA arrested a suspected key armourer and logistics courier believed to be supplying weapons for attacks on oil facilities and security personnel.

The Nigerian Army announced on Thursday that the suspect was captured during an intelligence-led raid deep inside the Akpe Aggah–Egbema Forest axis, where troops also recovered a large cache of firearms and ammunition.

According to the Army, the operation was carried out in the early hours of July 1, 2026, following credible intelligence. Soldiers conducted a coordinated search of the Obiakpu Forest, leading to the arrest of the suspect, who is believed to have played a central role in arming a criminal network operating in the Ohaji–Egbema area of Imo State.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect served as the principal armourer and logistics coordinator for the group accused of carrying out attacks on oil installations and troops deployed to protect critical infrastructure in the region.

During the operation, troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, one M4A1 carbine, one M16A2 rifle, six rifle magazines, five pump-action guns, a locally fabricated pistol and a large quantity of assorted ammunition.

The Nigerian Army described the recovery as a significant breakthrough, saying it had disrupted the operational capability and supply chain of the criminal network.

“The recovery represents a major disruption to the group’s operational capability and logistics chain,” the Army said in a statement posted on its official X account.

Military authorities added that the suspect remains in custody and will undergo further interrogation to assist ongoing investigations. The Army said intelligence gathered from the suspect is expected to support follow-up operations aimed at identifying, arresting and dismantling other members and collaborators of the criminal network.

The latest operation forms part of ongoing efforts by Operation UDO KA to combat armed groups, protect oil infrastructure and improve security across Imo State and the wider South-East region.
