The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released activists Randy Peter and Precious Oruche, popularly known as Mama Pee, after both honoured an invitation by the anti-graft agency at its headquarters in Abuja.
The activists regained their freedom shortly after midnight on Wednesday following several hours of questioning. According to their colleague, Justice Cracks, they have been directed to return to the commission’s office on Thursday for further engagement.
Justice Cracks, who accompanied the pair to the EFCC headquarters, disclosed the development in a post on X. He said the activists arrived at the commission’s office at about 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday and spent nearly 11 hours there before they were allowed to leave.
“My dear brother, @Peter4Nigeria, and my sister, @MamaPee__ were invited by the EFCC. I personally accompanied them there… They were eventually released at around 12:00 a.m. and were asked to return the following day,” he wrote.
Earlier in the day, concerns had grown over the whereabouts of the two activists after Esther Umoh, the 2023 presidential campaign photographer for Labour Party’s Peter Obi, revealed on social media that they had remained at the EFCC office several hours after honouring the invitation.
Umoh’s post sparked speculation online that the duo had been arrested, with supporters demanding clarification about their status.
However, Justice Cracks later confirmed that both activists had been released and assured supporters that they were safe. He also shared a video from the car park of the EFCC headquarters while waiting for them to leave the premises.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC has not publicly stated the reason for inviting Randy Peter and Mama Pee or disclosed the subject of its ongoing engagement with the activists.
