A fresh social media clash has erupted between singer Davido and Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, following a disagreement over the artist’s actions during the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The exchange began after Omokri commented on Davido’s decision to wear a customized jacket bearing the names of abducted schoolchildren from Oyo State during a World Cup appearance. Omokri argued that using a global sporting platform to highlight kidnapping incidents could unintentionally give publicity to criminal groups.
Davido did not hold back in his response. In a post that quickly gained traction online, the award-winning singer referred to the former presidential aide as “Bingo,” adding a derogatory remark that sparked widespread reactions across social media.
Responding on Instagram, Omokri shared screenshots of Davido’s comments and described the singer’s reaction as both surprising and disappointing. He said he expected a different approach from a global music star with a large international following.
“Dear Mr. David Adeleke AKA Davido, thank you for your feedback. I was rather surprised by your response to my post. Most shocking is your insult,” Omokri wrote.
The former presidential aide said Davido appeared upset over his criticism of the World Cup stunt, particularly after Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi publicly praised the singer’s gesture. According to Omokri, his concern was not Davido’s intention but the possible consequences of drawing international attention to terrorist and kidnapping activities.
He argued that while raising awareness about the plight of abducted children may be well-intentioned, such actions could inadvertently help criminal groups spread fear, attract recruits, and gain wider recognition.
Omokri contrasted Davido’s approach with that of popular American content creator IShowSpeed, who also attended World Cup activities. He noted that the influencer used the global platform to promote Nigeria positively by wearing the country’s jersey and speaking favourably about the nation.
The disagreement has since generated intense debate online, with supporters of both figures divided over whether international celebrities should use global events to spotlight national security concerns or focus on promoting the country’s positive image abroad.
