Poland defender Przemysław Wiśniewski has revealed why he barely celebrated after scoring a dramatic late equaliser in his country’s 2-2 draw against Nigeria in an international friendly in Warsaw.
The centre-back rescued a point for Poland with a powerful long-range effort in the closing stages of the match, beating Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and cancelling out Paul Onuachu’s late penalty that had put Nigeria ahead.
Despite the importance of the goal, Wiśniewski’s reaction was surprisingly restrained, with the defender simply raising his hands instead of launching into a full celebration.
Speaking after the game, the 27-year-old explained that the moment happened so quickly that he had no celebration planned. He also admitted that exhaustion played a major role in his reaction.
“I didn’t have a planned celebration because I don’t score often,” Wiśniewski told reporters via Przegladsportowy. “I just struck it, and it went in – pure instinct.”
The goal was particularly significant for the Polish defender as it was his first for the national team since making his international debut against the Netherlands in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in September 2025.
Reflecting on the dramatic finish, Wiśniewski said fatigue had set in by the final minutes of the match, making an energetic celebration the last thing on his mind.
“I was fatigued in the 90th minute, so I wasn’t inclined to run around; I merely raised my hands. I’m pleased to have scored such a first goal,” he added.
The defender also expressed surprise at the quality of the strike, admitting that scoring from such a distance is not something he regularly practices.
“I don’t know if I’ll be able to repeat it soon. I don’t score shots like that in training,” he said.
The thrilling encounter ended 2-2 after both sides produced an entertaining display in Warsaw. For Nigeria, attention now turns to their next international friendly, where the Super Eagles will be aiming for a stronger result against Portugal.
