The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has unveiled a sweeping leadership overhaul, with its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, dissolving the group’s third Directorate of State (DoS) administration and appointing a new leadership team to steer the organisation.

The announcement was made in a statement released on Wednesday from Langerfeld, Germany. According to the group, Kanu approved the immediate dissolution of the outgoing administration and named United States-based Mazi Chris Nwaogu as the new Head of the Directorate of State.

IPOB said Nwaogu will take charge of the organisation’s administration, coordination, and daily operations under Kanu’s authority. The Directorate of State, established in 2012, functions as the administrative arm of the pro-Biafra movement and has played a central role in managing its activities over the years.

Previous leaders of the Directorate include Dr. Justin Akujieze, Mazi Uchenna Asiegbu, and Chika Edoziem, who headed the third administration from 2017. The group explained that the latest changes followed an internal assessment of the outgoing leadership during what it described as a critical period in its history.

According to the statement, concerns surrounding the welfare of detained members, internal disputes, communication gaps, organisational unity, and the need for a fresh strategic direction influenced the decision to restructure the leadership.

“The dissolution of the third administration is ultimately not an act of vengeance but an act of organisational renewal,” IPOB stated, stressing that the move is aimed at strengthening the organisation rather than punishing individuals.

As part of the restructuring, the new leadership has been tasked with rebuilding trust among members, improving internal communication, strengthening unity across chapters, and prioritising member welfare. The organisation also announced the creation of an Elders Advisory Council, which will serve as a strategic advisory body between Kanu and the Directorate of State.

The newly inaugurated Directorate includes Mazi Solomon Egbo as Deputy Head of DoS, Nwada Ogwu Nnennaya Anya I. as Head of Finance and Budget Planning, Mazi Chigozie Okekenta as Coordinator of Coordinators, Dr. Chukwudi Nwogwugwu as Head of Medical and Welfare Planning, and Barrister Ikechukwu Onuoha as Head of Media. Comrade Emma Powerful was retained as IPOB’s Spokesperson and Media and Publicity Secretary.

The group also announced regional representatives covering Africa, Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East, alongside national coordinators for Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. IPOB directed all officers, coordinators, and unit heads worldwide to establish contact with its headquarters in Germany for further instructions.

In another major development, the organisation disclosed that previously suspended or expelled officers have been reinstated pending further administrative review. IPOB urged members and supporters to remain united as the new administration takes over leadership responsibilities.

The leadership shake-up comes as the pro-Biafra group continues efforts to reorganise its structures and operations across Nigeria and its international chapters amid ongoing political and legal developments involving its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
