Babcock University has disowned a fake academic certificate circulating on social media, warning that the document was never issued by the institution and urging the public to verify all academic credentials through its official channels.
In a public notice dated June 29, 2026, the university said fraudsters were circulating documents falsely claiming to originate from the institution. Management stressed that the certificates were unauthorized and formed part of attempts to mislead employers, educational institutions, government agencies and the general public.
One of the documents identified by the university was an “Honorary Certificate” allegedly issued by the “Babcock University Biochemistry Computer Club” to Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, claiming he graduated with a “First Class Upper.” The university said the certificate was fraudulent and did not come from any recognised office within the institution.
Babcock University explained that it does not issue honorary certificates to recognise undergraduate academic performance. It also clarified that the academic classification stated on the document does not exist in its grading system.
According to the university, the correct academic distinction is First Class Honours, which is awarded only through official degree certificates and academic transcripts issued by the Office of the Registrar.
The institution urged employers, professional bodies, higher education institutions and government agencies not to accept any academic documents purportedly issued by Babcock University outside its established academic procedures.
Management further warned that anyone found producing, distributing, presenting or using forged academic documents could face investigation and prosecution under laws covering forgery, fraud and the falsification of academic records.
To prevent fraud, the university advised members of the public to confirm the authenticity of any academic credential directly through its Office of the Registrar before relying on it for employment, admission or any other official purpose.
