A deadly ambush on Nigerian troops has left one soldier dead and another injured in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, raising fresh concerns over insecurity in the South-East region.

The incident reportedly involved personnel of the 34 Artillery Brigade, who came under heavy fire while responding to a field assignment along the SPDC–Etekuru road.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a post on his X handle on Tuesday, citing security sources familiar with the operation.

According to the report, the troops had been deployed to assess a burnt Hilux vehicle in the area when they were suddenly attacked at about 12:53 p.m. on May 4.

The attackers opened fire immediately upon contact, triggering a gun battle between both sides as the soldiers attempted to repel the assault.

During the exchange, one soldier was confirmed killed in action, while another sustained injuries and was evacuated for medical attention. The attackers also reportedly seized two AK-47 rifles and damaged a military vehicle before escaping the scene.

Following the attack, reinforcement troops were deployed to the area, forcing the assailants to withdraw from the location.

A subsequent sweep of the environment led to the discovery of two burnt vehicles, as well as the bodies of two unidentified individuals. The remains were taken to a hospital morgue for further investigation.

The military has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but security operations in the area have reportedly been intensified as authorities move to track the attackers.

The attack adds to a growing list of violent incidents in parts of Imo State, where security forces continue to battle armed groups operating in rural and forested communities.
