Fresh political tension has emerged within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Okigwe North Federal Constituency as party member Comr. Chima Ewurum called on Hon. Miriam Onuoha to stand by her earlier endorsement of Hon. Uchenna Agasu following the party’s House of Representatives primary election.
The controversy follows growing disagreements over the outcome of the APC primary, which produced Agasu as the party’s candidate for the constituency ahead of the general elections.
Ewurum, an APC member from Onuimo Local Government Area, made his position known in a video obtained by OtownGist while reacting to recent political developments within the constituency.
Hon. Miriam Onuoha, the current representative of Okigwe North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, had publicly congratulated Agasu shortly after the primaries and pledged support for his candidacy.
However, political debates intensified after a communiqué allegedly issued by some APC stakeholders from Isiala Mbano surfaced online, rejecting the outcome of the primary election process.
Reacting to the development, Ewurum expressed disappointment over what he described as efforts to undermine the process after earlier public declarations of support.
“How can you now renege on your words to join in this shenanigans… that the process that produced Hon. Uche Agasu is bad?” he said in the video.
He further stated that he believes the federal lawmaker may be under pressure from political actors who benefit from internal party conflicts.
“I know her as a peacemaker and bridge builder,” Ewurum added, while urging Onuoha to remain loyal to the APC leadership and maintain the position she took immediately after the primaries.
The APC chieftain also linked his appeal to issues of political equity within Okigwe North Federal Constituency, which comprises Isiala Mbano, Okigwe, and Onuimo Local Government Areas.
According to him, Onuimo people have consistently supported candidates from other parts of the constituency despite never producing a representative for the federal seat. He argued that Agasu’s emergence has revived hope among many residents in the area who previously felt politically excluded.
“When you spoke after the primaries, hope came alive for those of us in Onuimo that had lost hope,” he stated, while also commending Hope Uzodinma for promoting fairness and inclusiveness within the APC.
Political alignments and reactions continue to build across Okigwe North as stakeholders within the ruling party position themselves ahead of the next phase of the electoral process.
