A tense leadership dispute within the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Kano appears to have been resolved after a high-level meeting led by Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The closed-door engagement brought together key party stakeholders, including the state chairman, Hussaini Mairiga, as part of efforts to address internal disagreements that had threatened the party’s cohesion in Kano State.
Speaking after the meeting, Mairiga confirmed that all outstanding issues had been settled, describing the discussions as productive and focused on unity.
He said the stakeholders agreed to move forward collectively, adding that the party has now recognised Kwankwaso as its political leader in Kano State.
The resolution marks a significant shift from earlier tensions, where disagreements over control of the party structure had created uncertainty within the state chapter.
Mairiga urged party members to remain calm and committed, stressing that unity would be critical for the party’s performance in future elections.
The crisis had intensified following Kwankwaso’s recent defection to the NDC alongside other high-profile politicians, a move that raised questions about leadership control and influence within the party.
Before the latest meeting, the Kano leadership had resisted attempts to restructure the party hierarchy, insisting that existing executives would not relinquish authority without due process.
Negotiations between both sides had previously stalled, with parallel meetings failing to produce consensus and fuelling further division among members.
Tensions also grew amid reports that a planned state congress was suspended, deepening suspicions of internal manoeuvring over leadership arrangements.
Tuesday’s agreement now signals a reset for the party in Kano, with leaders hoping the truce will strengthen internal stability and position the NDC for upcoming political contests.
