Arsenal’s preparations for their decisive Champions League semi-final clash against Atlético Madrid have been dealt a setback, with four key players absent from training just days before the second leg.

Captain Martin Ødegaard and forward Kai Havertz were both missing from Monday’s open training session, raising fresh doubts over their availability for the high-stakes encounter.

The duo had been expected to return after manager Mikel Arteta expressed optimism following Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Fulham. Their absence, however, suggests fitness concerns may still linger at a crucial point in the season.

Also unavailable were defenders Jurrien Timber and midfielder Mikel Merino, both of whom have been sidelined for extended periods. While neither was expected back immediately, the club remains hopeful they could feature again before the campaign concludes.

The timing of these absences presents a challenge for Arsenal as they prepare to face Atlético Madrid in what promises to be a defining fixture in their European campaign.

There was, however, a positive development for the Gunners, as Bukayo Saka took part in the training session. The winger recently returned from injury and made an appearance in the win over Fulham, offering a boost to Arteta’s attacking options.

Saka’s return could prove significant, particularly if key creative figures like Ødegaard remain unavailable. His pace and direct play have often been central to Arsenal’s attacking threat this season.
