A military convoy in Zamfara State came under sudden attack on Monday, triggering a fierce gun battle that left several bandits dead and one soldier killed.

The clash occurred in Tsafe Local Government Area when troops escorting the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, encountered fleeing terrorists along the Maitashi axis.

The incident reportedly unfolded around 4:30 p.m. on April 6, 2026, as the GOC was returning from an operational visit to assess security conditions and troop deployments in Kulchin Kalgo and the Forward Operating Base in Danjibga.

Security sources said the convoy ran into armed bandits attempting to escape the area, sparking an immediate exchange of gunfire. Soldiers engaged the attackers, overpowering them in a confrontation that led to multiple casualties among the fleeing group.

Weapons, ammunition, and motorcycles believed to have been used by the bandits were recovered during the operation, indicating the group’s mobility and preparedness before the encounter.

Despite the tactical success, the military suffered a loss. A soldier who sustained gunshot injuries during the firefight was evacuated to Keta Healthcare Centre but later died from his wounds.

Following the clash, troops conducted a clearance operation to secure the area before the convoy resumed its movement to Gusau. Military operations in the region are said to be ongoing as efforts intensify to flush out remaining insurgents.
